I remember the fuss when people discovered that WGA was phoning home.
Well, Vista users prepare yourself for this one. Besides WGA, Vista has 20 other features and services that collects information and sends it to Redmond. We are talking among others about Windows Update, Web Content, Digital Certificates, Auto Root Update, Windows Media Digital Rights Management, Windows Media Player, Malicious Software Removal/Clean On Upgrade, Network Connectivity Status Icon, Windows Time Service and the IPv6 Network Address Translation (NAT) Traversal service (Teredo).
In the EULA, it states that if the users uses these tools, he agrees to the sharing of this information. According to Microsoft, the users can disable these services but in the case of Windows Update for example, this isn't advisable. So you can only opt-out by not using them.
Microsoft claims not to use the date to identify users but they could if needed. So it remains a big question what will be done with this information. The distribution to third party is also an option since the EULA states that this information may be shared if the law requires them to or just if they wish to do so.
