A research from G DATA reveals that a third of (unoffical) game patches and cheats contains spyware, Trojans and other malware. G DATA investigated about 1000 files to arrive at this conclusion.
As always, reports and studies from a security vendor must always be taken with a grain of salt but even if the number are smaller, it's a common source of infection.
Gamers often deactivate anti-virus and firewall to game to be sure that it will run as fast as possible. This is why they are an excellent target group. So beware of unofficial patches of untrusted sources. Stick to official patches only and even run those through a virusscanner before installing. Mistakes are only human.
