Cybercrime statistics released by Belgian Government



Belgium, a country with a population of about 10.5 million people. In 2006, about 52.6% of the population were internet users (source: Demorgen). So Belgian online community counts about 5.5 million users.
Two weeks ago, a press statement was released by the federal police regarding internet crime in 2007. The police portal www.ecops.be registered 23.832 messages of which 17.089 were punishable acts. Most of these crimes were cases of 419 fraud (8.780 cases) followed by general internet fraud (4.706 cases) and phishing (1.262 cases). The total number of cases was an increase of 750% compared to the 2.360 case registered in 2002.
